Wellnerova 19

"A tribute to functionalism, elegance, wit and contemporary Czech design. The interior design of the villa from 1933 creates contemporary living for a family of eight with a reference to the 30s.”

Atmosphere
the thirties

Wellner's villa is located not far from the center of Olomouc, and according to the records of historian Professor Pavel Zatloukal, the author is the famous architect and urban planner Bohuslav Fuchs. In the 90s, the villa underwent a transformation that did not show much respect for the original form and completely alienated the house from its functionalist identity.

One of the main motives of the reconstruction was for the current owner Mgr. René Mohylu was just restored to its original form, and so it happened that when our joint work on the interior began and I came to the construction site for the first time in November 2019, only the ground floor remained of the villa and the house was rebuilt brick by brick.

The original villa was small for a large family, despite the fact that it was originally intended for only 6 household members. Thus, a superstructure and an extension were created according to the design of the PAB atelier in Olomouc. Today, 8 members of the household live in the villa, including 6 children, the villa has a total of 4 residential floors, 2 children had to accept a younger sibling in the room and the project was changing under their hands. A garage and a wellness area with a swimming pool and sauna are located in the adjacent extension. Work on the villa continues even now, when the cellar is being converted into a wine cellar.

In the morphology of the designed furniture and other elements, I used my favorite rounding in order to soften the space. To create movement and rhythm, it was the use of a repeating gradation of masses accompanied by simple lines. Even the idea of gradation comes from the motifs of folding nesting tables and can be seen, for example, in the design of the fireplace and the red dining table. The motif of the bend of a functionalist tube runs through the entire house, for adults in chrome, for children in colors. Other designed interior elements also follow the art objects in the house.

I approached the interior design with respect for the functionalism and applied art of the 30s. After all, designing the interior of Fuchs' villa caused me a certain sense of responsibility from the beginning. I put the greatest emphasis on detail and atypical, author's production. I was looking for connections between my work and functionalism. I implemented elements of minimalism into the villa and subsequently deliberately disturbed their harmony, experimented and created various surprises and jokes. As was also the case in functionalism, I was not afraid of using rich colors and distinctive structures of stone, of which 8 types were used in the villa. They are with distinctive walnut and ash veneer and terrazzo, with 2 exceptions, the only patterns used in the house. When designing, I kept the truth of the materials and structures used.

I designed everything so that it worked and pedaled like clockwork. After all, coordinating such a large household is extremely demanding. Thinking about the functioning of such a large family was a big topic for me, and it also resulted in friendly compromises arising from the unique synergy of cooperation. In the design, I tried to maximize the storage spaces. I hid them as much as possible so that everything in the interior flowed.

I kept the ground floor of the villa in black and white. In the villa, the color green is the color of the green transition from the exterior to the interior. The color blue is used on elements with the symbolism of the sky and its ascent to it, pale blue is subsequently supplemented with the morphology of clouds. The color red is the color of the owner's temperament and generally the color of family warmth, while pink is the favorite color of girls.

A historic villa near the center of Olomouc lost its significant functionalist face with an insensitive transformation in the nineties. With the new owners came a complete reconstruction, which breathed back the atmosphere of the XNUMXs into the building and brought a prestigious award.
The architects have created a discreet concept in the sloping plot, which does not disturb the natural panorama or be visible from the public road. The artistically mastered material abstracts to the subtle elegance of an unpretentious building, where, despite the creative details, it is obvious not to be humble.

The intention of the current modifications was to uncover the authentic layer of the original house and restore the atmosphere of the 30s. For the needs of a large family, it was necessary to increase the capacity. The new layer approaches the original parts with piety and respect, but at the same time they are not afraid to assert themselves confidently.
