Hidden door frames are not addressed until the end
The basic rule is simple: the hidden door frame is installed before the final surfaces of the walls and floors.
The reason is obvious. The door frame should be incorporated into the structure so that the wall and the adjacent layers fit exactly with it. If it were to be installed after the plastering or finishing of the floors, complications, compromises and often unnecessary extra work would arise.
Therefore, with concealed door frames, you need to think ahead:
- on the wall composition,
- on the resulting thickness of the plaster or screed,
- to the final floor height,
- on the connection method in bathrooms or other areas with tiles.
At what stage of construction should the installation take place?
The ideal time to install a concealed door frame is when the rough construction preparation of the opening is complete, but the final surfaces have not yet been applied.
In practice this means:
- the hole must have the correct dimensions and flatness,
- the final floor height must be clearly determined,
- The wall composition and final surface must be known,
- It must be decided whether the wall will be plastered, plastered, tiled or another material.
Only when these connections are resolved does the installation of the door frame make sense.
How to sequence work correctly
1. Rough construction readiness
First, a building opening must be prepared in appropriate dimensions and quality. With concealed door frames, precision is essential because they work with minimal continuity and the final detail hides nothing.
2. Installing a hidden door frame
The frame is installed in the prepared opening before the walls and floors are finished. At this stage, it is crucial to ensure that it is precisely plumb, level and at the correct height relative to the final floor.
3. Subsequent plastering, screeding or cladding
After the door frame is installed, the wall is finished so that it seamlessly connects to its visible edge. This is where the quality of the resulting detail is decided.
4. Floors
Floors are only solved according to the finally installed door frame and the known height of the detail. It is necessary to monitor continuity, especially in the case of a threshold-free solution and a clean landing of the door leaf.
5. Tiling and other final layers
In bathrooms, wellness areas or other heavily used spaces, it is important to decide in advance how the cladding will connect to the door frame.
6. Final completion of the door set
The door leaf, hardware and final adjustment come only after the wet and dusty processes are completed.
What you need to know before installing plaster
The plasterer or drywaller must know exactly what detail is to be created. With hidden door frames, there is no room for improvisation on the spot.
It is necessary to be clear about:
- what will be the final surface thickness,
- where will be the exact front plane,
- how the transition between the door frame and the wall will be solved,
- whether the door leaf will be intended for paint, wallpaper, putty or another surface.
Floors: the final height is decisive
One of the most common mistakes occurs when the final floor height is not clearly determined during installation. For concealed door frames, this is a crucial detail that determines the height of the entire system.
If the floor height changes during construction and the door frame is already installed, the problem is then transferred to the door detail.
Tiling: decide everything in advance
A specific chapter is bathrooms and other spaces with ceramic or stone tiles. Here it is necessary to determine in advance:
- whether the cladding will fit the door frame,
- whether it will go to its edge,
- how the corner and the continuity of materials will be solved,
- What is the exact thickness of the tile including the adhesive?
Additional solutions directly on site tend to be more complex and unnecessarily open up room for inaccuracies.
